Subj: [kl] The TRUE Mozart concerto...
Date: Thu, 14 Oct 1999 12:05:50 -0400

Taken from Pamela Westons's Virtuosi of the Past.

When Willman played the Mozart clarinet Concerto in London in 1838,
the Musical World gave it short shrift.

Here is what they said:
"The novelty it will be seen was the concerto said to be the
composition of Mozart, and proceeding from the laboratory of M.Andre of
Offenbach, who like M.Fetis with the compositions of Beethoven, has
proved himself to be an industrious stepfather to the posthumous
compositions of Mozart.
The first movement is the music of the Wig; in it's terse and
sententious phrases we discover the wig-tailed Maestro of the last
century; but there is nothing that M.Andre could not have written
himself.
The Finale of the present concerto is decidedly vulgar, and as far as a
single hearing may be depended on, affords evidence of haste and
inexperience.
The Andante has the true Mozartian flavor about it."

How do you like them apples?
