home.com was not responding to incoming mail for a good portion of yesterday.

Ezmlm (the list software) works on a semi-quadratic backoff algorithm for unresponsive mail systems (the exact algorithm is buried somewhere in the code) so as to keep the mail system from becoming saturated with bouces and/or retries. In simpler language, it takes longer and longer between groups of retries. This makes messages come in out of order once your mail server comes back online - and helps keep it from going back down. It doesn't get a flood of messages all at once from sneezy once sneezy re-establishes contact.
