Walter,

The Lyons clarinet is a very basic instrument, designed for young children
to learn to play. It does not have a full compliment of keys and is very
lightly sprung. When you are accustomed to holding a weighty instrument of
substance in your hands, it comes as somewhat of a surprise to pick up the
Lyons instrument and play it. My immediate reaction when I first saw and
held it was that it was a piece if junk. After closer inspection, I
realized that it really is a small wonder that something so almost nebulous
could actually do what a clarinet does. Once I became accustomed to its
design, I was really amazed at what could be accomplished with the thing. I
have used it for everything and it has served me well. I am playing Zampa
and I wanted to play it on the C instrument that it was written for because
it sounds better that way (my personal preference, no flames please) and it
doesn't have the keywork necessary to play the part, so I bought a "real" C
clarinet. I am getting calls from everywhere to play C parts, so the
investment was warranted. And I actually have played it in the shower,
where it sounds fantastic!
