You may or may not believe this but the oboe the girl was expected to play
on parade is a fully professional model (Marago - Sp??).

I have seen in amonst our marches at work parts printed for oboe as well
bassoon. Mostly these are old British Marches...a few of the really early
Kenneth J. Alford stuff as well as others. Maybe there was a time when you
were expected to march with whatever instrument you joined on. In fact, when
I did the Royal Tournament in London back in '95 the Indian Air Force Band
had a Bassoon on parade. But they had memorised all their parts. And talking
to the Army bassoon player the other day, she was saying that when she first
joined the army, over in Perth, she was expected to march with her bassoon.
In fact they had to drill extra holes in the instrument to fit a box onto
the bassoon in order to screw in a lyre???? Is there no end to Military
Intelligence :)

All the best
Rod
