Jill: Several years ago I bought a new R-13, and it had a crack in the
upper joint that had been covered over. I wrote to Boosey-Hawkes, and they
told me to return the instrument and they would give me a new upper
joint. When the instrument arrived (it was over a month), I discovered
that there was no serial number on the new upper joint, but the old joint
(of course) had its original serial number. For a brief moment I didn't
know whether to request a new serial number for the upper joint, or to have
the original number imprinted. I thought it would look strange to see
different numbers, so I asked them to put the old number on the new joint,
which they did. From that time on, I have wondered if upper and lower
joints are made from the same piece of wood. I suppose different pieces of
wood with different ages can be matched, if the ages are not too far
apart. Maybe someone on the list can clear up my confusion. Anyhow, Jill,
you may have to make the same decision that I had to make.
