I had an opportunity to try out a Lyons clarinet owned by another member of
the klarinet list. I think it has possibilities that are well worth
developing. However, what I found annoying was the fact that there were no
L-R, R-L for the E/B, F/C, F#/C#, etc. A note was either played by the LH
pinky or the RH pinky, but not by both. I used the Lyons stock mouthpiece
with an Eb reed. I would be interested in trying it with a real Eb
mouthpiece and perhaps a stronger reed than I had at the time.
I don't think it is appropriate for orchestral use, but I do think it is
a viable option for children who are beginning to learn the instrument and
whose fingers have yet to be long and fleshy enough to hold a regular
clarinet and sufficiently cover its holes. It could also be very useful for
any clarinetist in a military band situation who is forced by the"powers
that be" to perform in poor weather conditions.
As for using it to teach small children how to play, this is certainly a
possibility worth exploring. I, however, have no intention of teaching
anyone to play any instrument without teaching them how to read music.
I certainly hope Mr. Lyons will continue to pursue his ideas and eveolve
this instrument. Perhaps a quasi-Greenline version?
