Hmmm.... Wouldn't she get exactly the same sound using an *oboe* without a
reed?

In that case, she'd at least know the proper fingerings -- whether or not
she used a lyre. And she wouldn't have to be issued an extra instrument.

In fact, if the entire "reed" section went on parade "without a reed on,"
it would be easy to vary the instrumentation to get the desired visual
effect. (This could start an entirely new thread about the musicality of
marching bands. If the oboist fingers a wrong note but she isn't using a
reed, does it harm the music?)
