i wasnt aware that there are oboes in marching bands.
are there?

I have seen some flute players march with a wooden arm
held in the arm
pit. This puts the music right in
front of the face. This would work
for an oboe.

Is this a highschool band? Given my
eyes, I could never see much of
the
music unless we were standing still.
I simply played the melody in the
highest register I could manage and as
loud as I could. OK, it wasn't
the right part, but band directors
have enough trouble with the kids
who are playing wrong notes, or right
notes at the wrong pitch or time.
They don't have time to mess with
people who sound OK. Bonus: I can
play by ear. Of course, it was good
that I didn't need an "A" in band
to get into college.
