And now I'll quote the Gershwin tune: "It ain't necessarily so!"

Most of the bands I dealt with while serving in the U. S. Navy (20 years
worth) DID march, and at no time were required to memorize the music.

I've already suggested to the original poster to get a flute "pep" lyre for
the marching oboist, since there's no "oboe lyre" out there that I'm aware of.
