At least one of his "classical" performances was incredible: I heard BG
play the Mozart concerto in London in the mid 1970's. I had heard his
recording of this work and did not care for it. Being a student, I was, of
course very critical - and not into jazz. It really hurt paying all that
money for the ticket but I've never regretted it! This was for me the
definitive performance! Such a joy in the music! All the notes were there
too. O.K., the 16th passages were *ever so slightly* swung. In the
meantime, I've learned about embellishing, eingaenge, improvising, etc. But
if I hadn't heard that wonderful performance, my life would be poorer.

I heard him play live with the Norfolk Symphony back in 1977. I was only in
8th grade at the time. He played the Weber Concertino, which I was in the
process of using for Competitions, so it was a real treat to hear my first
live Clarinet performance. One of the Clarinetists in the Symphony (Herb
Seibren) said that the concert was the highlight of his playing career.
