You both express this more elegantly, but i want to add my voice to this
disscusion.

i hear players (both amateurs and occasionally pros) whose phrasing and
musicality are so strong that even if they miss a note i can hear it by
implication.

i had a teacher who made the comment, "you played that well," as a
criticism. Good comments were, "that made me feel ..... "sad", "happy"
"like dancing," etc.
Playing well is not an end in itself. i am not against accurate
controlled technically clean playing! But i will always prefer a
performance that lets the composer speak even if it has a few flaws to a
technical (defensively) obvious-error-free presentation.

I think everyone starts with a love of music. There are many pressures
and reasons that the excitment and love of music gets buried or twisted
in some players. It is our individual responsibilty to keep that joy
alive within ourselves.
