Wow. Thanks Mike B. for the information about the Goodman CD of the
broadcast premier of the Copland Concerto. I hope this means I can stop
feeling guilty about not having had the tape I have restored. In all, this
was one of Goodman's best performances (I also have a tape of him playing the
von Weber 1st Concerto with NBC) in a "legit" piece (sorry for the
term).Three oddities I recall about this Copland performance. When, in the
cadenza, he is about to begin the lengthy tongued passage, m. 124 I believe,
he plays the "d", stops, pauses, then starts it over. It doesn't sound
wrong, almost better than what is there. Secondly, from m. 365 on there are
many Cb's played, C natural, again, not really sounding wrong, just different
from performances from him and others later. And lastly, there is no gliss
to the final high D. I enjoyed his performance at the time and am truly glad
to see it is available. I also heard him play the Nielsen prior to the
recording that is being discussed so much here. Unfortunately, I have to say
the live performance was not even as good as the record. Doug P.
