Not weird, just technologically interesting. The presumption is that the
composer's interpretation and tempos can be accurately recreated in the
accompaniment while, for the solo, RE-creation is unnecessary! I have the
Michael Tilson Thomas version and, while it may not be my ultimate FAVORITE
Rhapsody in Blue, it certainly has its moments. Actually I am partial to
Oscar Levant and an old 78 rpm version by Alec Templeton (both,
coincidentally, with Andre Kostelanetz). Levant for sure, but probably
both of them, knew the composer personally and could be historically
accurate in their interpretations, since they were THERE.
