Andy,

Giampieri is in the quintessential late 19th-C. great operatic tradition. Most likely the Italian school fingering system facilitated some of the playing which the Boehm German-school fingering finds 'awkward', as you are discovering. Also, the low-eb would have been standard for any opera player, where the performer
would need the low e-flat to play the a clarinet parts on the b-flat.
Everything was transposed, as there was often not enough time to switch instruments. (or switching would be unreliable due to the coldness of the switched-to instrument, and hence risk of being out-of-tune).

So cherish your little time with Mr. Giampieri. You might learn good operatic tradition while you overcome technical hurdles.
