Hal,

Recently, I was given an old metal ligature and, just for fun, I cleaned it
up and had it gold plated for a relatively small cost. Maybe that approach
would solve your daughter's problem quite cheaply.

Subject: [kl] ligatures

I am a long time clarinetist and my 11 year old daughter has now been
playing for two years. Recently, she has developed an usual problem - a
skin irritation/rash under her lower lip from the contact with the
ligature. She has used the silver ligature that came with her Buffet E11
and recently switched to a silver Vandoren Optimum ligature. Her
dermatologist states that this is a sensitivity to nickel (?) and that
there must be nickel in the plating also. I am considering switching her
to an inverted ligature, probably cloth. She uses a Vandoren B45
mouthpiece. Can anyone out there recommend a good ligature to try? Thanks
in advance.

Hal
