Thanks Kevin for the comments. Actually, Chicago Symphony in the Reiner days
could be "loud", but that's not quite the best word. When it let loose with
all forces, especially in R. Strauss it was loud, but a better word is "big".
I once sat right in front of Bud Herseth's trumpet playing, and guess what:
it didn't hurt, is was BIG and Beautiful. I just wish I could say that about
so many other trumpet players who have been right behind my ears. Chicago
is/was a big sound, and yes, with dynamic contrasts, more then than now I
feel, and yes, in tune, wonderfully so. But, they could ring the rafters,
especially that great brass section. Doug P.
