Perhaps you should convince your school to purchase the stand for their
instrument. If a stand keeps it out of the repair shop even once, you
probably have made up the price of the stand.

As to Buffet vs. Selmer, you will get a huge range of answers. Its like
asking about mouthpieces. I personally like Buffet Prestige Basses. I have
played both and think that the Buffet has better response and a more even,
focused sound. The Selmer tends to be a bit brighter and "edgier." As a
symphonic sound the new Buffets are great or the old Selmers are quite good
as well. The new Selmers don't thrill me as much. If I were playing more
shows and jazz and stuff like that, I'd probably like the Selmers more.
