David,
Perhaps I should have added, that whenever about to apply a treatment of any
kind to wood, first test it on a small patch, say, the underside of the body
of the clarinet where the result, if "poor", may be obscured by the hardware.
If the almond oil treatment gave the result you stated, I'd check the oil
container to ascertain whether there were any synthetic inclusions which
might have contributed to the result.
Or, perhaps the original colour was not Indian ink as you surmised had been
used in the first place.
It is not a calamitous outcome, as it is possible to minimise the impact of
the almond oil, or better still, let time do it for you.
