I don't know if I'm alone in this, but I find Selmer metal mpcs quite
difficult to use effectively. I purchased one of the metal classical
sax mouthpieces for my soprano some months ago, a C* facing on which I
could use a harder reed. What I found was that the soprano--always hard
on intonation--became downright unmanageable with this mouthpiece. I
have had no such problems with a Yanigasawa 5 or a metal Otto Link
7--the intonation and octave jumps are there, and true. On the Selmer
it was a horror-show. The only thing that solved the problem was a
change in ligature. I took a chance on a new ligature company I saw
advertising in Saxophone Player magazine. Now, attendez: I am NOT a
compensated spokesman for Consoli (http://www.consolims.com/), but the
ligature allows the horn now to play with firm intonation while using
the Selmer metal mouthpiece. Consoli seems to have a gift for salvaging
difficult or unplayable mouthpieces.
