I've never read anyone saying that they deteriorate, but there's some
controversy on whether or not they improve with age. It's pretty well agreed
that age doesn't hurt them, though.

Again, the answer is "yes". Personally, I'd unwrap them to let them
"breath", but there's no science done on them as of yet.

I'd say in the same conditions you'd store anything made of wood - in a
place where there's no major swings in relative humidity or temperature.
