Patty,
Perhaps they can't see the relevance of scales.
When I first started with the clarinet I couldn't see the point of scales -
so much mindless rubbish. One day my teacher pulled out some Mozart and
Stamitz sheet music, and pointing to various passages, demonstrated that the
music comprised large chunks of scales and arpeggios.
Might not work well with younger children, but sure worked with this big kid.
