The serial number in most cases is completely meaningless anyway, since records are very sketchy, and if indeed the name is used again, who says that the serial numbers are not restarted?

However, that being said going back to the reference (The New Langwill Index) and if you visit the Web page I noted, you'll find that the "other" Auguste Buffet clarinet was produced by the father of Louis Auguste Buffet, named Louis Auguste (Buffet jeune), b 1788 or 9, died sometime after 1838, so the chances are much slimmer that it is from the father.

In most cases, when a name is re-used, the mark changes slightly and can be used to date the instrument at least within a range of years. The New Lanwill indicates many of the marks and their variants over the years. In the case of Auguste Buffet, the son took over the father's mark and did not change it.
