Subj: [kl] Double lip emb -Reply

I know several fine players who use double lip and have so for years. I used
double lip for several years and loved the sound I achieved, but could never
stand up and play, which I like to do for solo recitals. I always relied on my
legs for support. One night in the orchestra pit, while reaching for a quick
page turn, I kept the clarinet in my mouth, bumped into the music stand and
jammed the mouthpiece up against my upper lip and cut it inside. As a result I
couldn't play double lip for several weeks and never went back. If the student
sounds good and can accomplish everything that is expected, then why make them
change? We have discussed anchor tongue vs. tip to tip on the list and have
come up with the same conclusions. I do not anchor tongue, but have two college
students who perform anchor tongue quite well. I won't change them unless
their style of tonguing cannot keep up with my other students. Likewise, if I
come across a double lipper, I don't think I would change them unless they had
problems with tone, intonation or air leakage from the corners of the mouth.
