Long before triple cases were availible retail, I made one for myself from
an attache case by American Tourister. >

I agree, sometimes a little ingenuity goes a long way. Last year, I became
very dissatisfied with my bass clarinet case. It was very awkward and
balanced poorly.

I looked around at what was available, and blanched at the prices.

So, I made my own!

I started with an old Selmer tenor sax case, making sure that the long joint
of the bass fitted in it with a little room. I gutted the case, and cleaned
it up. Spray painted it a nice matte black.

Then in my little basement workshop, I built a rugged wood frame to hold the
two joints. I built a bow, basically to hold the bell, I attached another
smaller "boxes" to hold mouthpiece, neck, reed holder.

I glued this frame to the case.

Then, I sent my wife to the fabric store (being the rugged male that I am, I
have a hard time entering a place of such overwhelming female presence). She
came home with some lovely blue velvet, with which I proceeded to line the
case. I made a large pad, mostly rags backed by cardboard and glued it to the
inside lid of the case.

Voila'. One very rugged bass clarinet case. Total out of pocket cost was
about $30. It's better than the original case the horn came in.
