As a way of side-stepping this question, I'll recommend that clarinetists
take a look at Howard Klug's book, The Clarinet Doctor. It has scale
exercises that seem really helpful and interesting, and many other fine
points, including discussions of various teaching problems and how to
approach solutions. It also has a guide to 4 years of undergraduate
study, including technique, etudes, solos, and chamber music (possible
orchestral rep too - can't remember, and too lazy to go upstairs and
look!). You can find the address of the publisher, Woodwindiana, on
Sneezy. Great book, worth every penny.
