Shame on me. I stated incorrectly that the players were from Philadelphia,
Chicago and Boston. They were in fact from Philadelphia, Chicago and
Cleveland (sorry, Mr. Adelstein!). Armando Ghitalla & the Boston gang are
on the CD, however, because the record company filled it out with some organ
& brass stuff starring E. Power Biggs. It's excellent, but not the same
caliber as the all-brass stuff (IMHO, of course).

It's a Columbia release (now Sony Masterworks) in the "Masterworks Heritage"
series. The # is Sony Classical MHK62353.

I'm just a mediocre clarinet player, so I really am not in a position to
evaluate the brass playing. Joe Alessi -- principal trombone of the NY
Philharmonic -- knows a little bit about brass playing, however, and has
this to say of the recording in the CD's liner notes:

"This recording was very inspirational for me and was to some extent the
reason for my success. Just looking at the cover photo was reason enough to
dream about becoming an orchestral musician. This recording needs to be
heard by the next generation of brass players."

Now, purists may cringe at the anachronism represented by this recording.
Gabrieli obviously never heard a modern valved trumpet or tuba, I have to
believe, however, that were he able to hear this he would like it a great
deal. And even if he wouldn't -- I don't care; I do.

(Please forgive my effusiveness this morning. I had this cranked on the car
stereo on the way in, to get pumped up for a hard day of contract drafting.
Lets' face it, I need all the pumping up I can get!).
