The "stuff" that is used is simply a square of plastic that is
vacuum-formed and then
heat-sealed to a mold of the teeth. I have one that was made by my
orthodontist and have been using it for years. If you don't have an
orthodontist, call the dental society and they will give the names of
responsible ones for you to contact. You also could (perish the thought)
choose one from the yellow pages. I have nice straight teeth and still
require this type of assistance. For the longest time, I used notebook
paper folded into a double thickness and then wet it and placed and molded
it over my lower front teeth. This worked okay, but had to be done every
three hours or so, as the paper would fray. The cost of one of these little
plastic
"essex retainers" as they are called, is about $75. For me it was
worth the money and it will last forever. It is a "permanent solution",
just as having crowns and caps would be, and doesn't begin to cost nearly as
much.
