Dear Cowzgomoo,

I salute you, bass clarinetist!

Dpending upon what the audition requirements are:

Scales, scales and MORE scales!! Building blocks of music!
Use the scales printed out on old band folders, or get the Rubank
Intermediate method for clarinet.

Concentrate on good tone and articulation. Get that nice full bass clarinet
sound - good support, avoid thinness, use a strong enough reed - and make
sure you use a nice crisp tongue. Practice you scales slurred, all tongued
and with various articulations.

If sightreading is required, scales help, because they help you recognize
all the different keys. Get ahold of some old method books, especiall
clarinet, trumpet or flute. Even try trombone and transposing from bass
clef if you're really game. (Later you will find a number of b.c. parts in
bass clef concert pitch for orchestra, so get ready!)

If there is prepared music, look at the phrases. Plan where you will
breathe and stay consistent with it.

In addition to Rubank intermediate, there are the Rubank advanced books for
more scale studies and Klose, and Lazarus for more advanced playing. You
can take a gander and see what will be challenging now and what can wait
until later.

Hope I helped. And I love your screen name!

Patty Smith
