Dan, let me reintroduce myself. We were on the same program at
Clarfest-Columbus, I played the Molter #3 on a D clarinet. In the 33 years
that I taught on the college level, I usually would work in 2 - 30 minute
lessons for freshmen and sophs, then hour lessons for juniors and seniors.
1st lesson was scales or Kroepsch, usually 2 etudes from contrasting books
(Rose and either Muller 21 or Thurston Paasage studies). the 2nd lesson was
devoted to solo material, usually a major work and some small pieces for
contrast. I felt that this provided enough contrast to keep the student
interested. The last two years when recitals were being prepared, the solo
lit. became the most important along with orch. studies. Carl Anderson
