As an undergrad, my weekly assignment consisted of all diatonic
scales in the Baermann book (slurred and staccato), along with
one key in the remainder of the book (i.e.; all of the thirds,
sixths, octaves, returning, broken, etc., in the key of, say,
Ab). Additionally, two etudes were prepared for each weekly
lesson, along with a movement of a concerto. This was pretty
much how my entire undergrad applied study program was structured.
At a minimum, I practiced 3 hours a day which, over time, was in-
creased to 4, 6, and eventually 8 hours as my relaxation and tech-
nical maturity rose to a certain level. This is the type of reg-
imen expected of students taught by members of the San Francisco
Symphony. In retrospect, I don't find it to be excessive or un-
realistic.
