Sorry to be late with this response where the thread is getting cold... been
busy trying to learn bass saxophone.

The "outside -> in" appoach also disgusts me. One seems to hear more and more
technically virtuoso performances with absolutely no message to it. Technique
stands more and more supreme while the music is more and more endangered.
This is encouraged by competitions which can really only compare technique.
Music must, by the nature of competition, take a back seat. Competition is
more something for horses actually..........

Tony's closing line seemed startling at first but actually it hits the nail
on the head exactly. I'm grateful to you Tony. It reminds me of Kato Havas'
description of the unfortunately typical way of doing vibrato on the violin,
"first you hit the note with your finger and then you shake a dead thing!"
Then, I guess, you "add life to it."
