I don't use a textbook. Instead, for instructional materials I use a
standard band method book. This gives the students experience in using
the books which they may be using when they become teachers. Also, I
found that there was so much in most of the books intended for use in such
classes that I disagreed with. It confuses students to have them buy a
book and then tell them that about one third of it is inaccurate or
misleading.

In order for the students to have a reference to take with them after the
class, I have them do an extensive notebook. In other words, they write
their own book, and I tell them what I want in it. In that way, I never
find myself in the process of disagreeing with their book, unless they
have made an omission or other error in putting the notebook together.
