I want to thank the experts who have willinging shared their
knowledge on the subject (in particular Tony Pay (the crocodile poem
really helped me) and David Blumberg). My teacher and I had this same
discussion just last week (I played it straight) and my end of the
discussion kept collapsing back to "but what do you do differently
down here where the composer is clearly calling for something
different?" (as is now patently obvious, I was/am not a music major
and my undergraduate alma mater didn't have a music program).
Everyone has given me some good thoughts to chew on (which I
desparately need since, to be utterly frank, the way I did play that
section left a lot to be desired if the tape I made of my practice
sessions this week is any indication).
