I have one of each of the two mouthpieces you ask about. My M13Lyre has
about the same tip opening as my M14 (a little more open than the M13's I
own). The M14 is significantly longer from tip to the bottom of the curve
(where the reed and mouthpiece separate) than either M13 sample. As a
result, the M14 offers less resistance and allows (probably requires) using
a stiffer reed. My M14 is very similar to my Gigliotti P mouthpiece. All of
this is, of course, based on single samples of each mouthpiece, and I've
heard from others that consistency can't be relied on.
