Subject: [kl] Mailing Clarinets

On the question of bad experiences mailing clarinets, I did a lot of
research into the various carriers and found too many UPS horror stories to
take a chance with them. I consequently used Canada Post (our USPS). I had
had two clarinets overhauled top-to-bottom by Tim Clark - silver plating,
the works - but when they were a month overdue and I contacted my local
post office, I was told that they had been delivered a month previously.
Looking carefully around my veranda, I discovered (in November) that the
postal worker had put them inside of a wicker basket which had been outside
the entrance to the house. Any number of fates could have befallen those
poor instruments. I let them warm for 24 hours inside before I even opened
the case.

This spring, under the heading of better-the-devil-you-know, I once again
had a total overhaul done by Tim to a new instrument. This time I knew
better than to have it sent in the fall (who knows how long it could be
mislaid?), so I sent it in the summer. The clarinet wasn't hidden this
time. Instead, the postal worker left it sitting right at my door in full
sight of anyone who happened by, with a declared value of $2700 in full
view on the package. Sigh . . .
