The result of the issue, as I see it, is thus: the reason the great
players are considered "great" is not because they can play so high
or so fast, or with such remarkable musicianship. Anybody can have
a momentary flash of brilliance and then disappear again when their
weaknesses take over. Shouryu uses the right word above when he
talks about *consistency*. The mark of a truly great player is one
who can *consistently* play at the highest levels of technical mastery =
and musicianship over time. How does that ancient saying
go? "Excellence is not a result, but a habit" ?
