I also am one who no longer plays music for money. And I thoroughly enjoy it.
But I don't equate fun with lack of hard work. I thoroughly enjoy practicing
hard at scales and arpeggios and any other technical exercises or musical
piece because I have one end in mind-- Playing it well.

One thing I continually impress on the few students I have; If you keep your mind
on the goal you will barely notice the labor that you have to expend to achieve that goal.

I find no enjoyment in sitting next to a musician who is just having fun, and yet can't play in tune,
or with decent time, articulation or any other technique which makes for good music, if that person doesn't
care about the quality of the sound being produced. Having fun should never be done at the
expense of good muscianship. Granted, you may never achieve the level of the
professional but you should always seek to do it well.

If what I just said makes me pompous, than so be it.
