I gotta say, this whole thread is making me very glad I picked trad jazz as
my main music. I warm up on scales, including blues & pentatonic scales,
and then start riffing on 'em. Soon, our tenor sax player picks it up,
starts a song and then we're off on a group improv-- all during warm-up.
It's fabulous fun, AND we're learning to play better as an ensemble at the
same time.

And, as much as I enjoy listening (and occasionally playing) say,
Shostakovich, something tells me I probably couldn't get away with this
kind warming up for one of his symphonies.

To kidnap a hoary old cliche: there is very little difference between
classical and jazz, but viva la difference!
