Yes, we can, but in truth, I'm in complete agreeance - a rigorous practice
schedule adhered to is VERY impressive, and the result is usually an
excellent sound and improved technique. In all honesty, I'm not nearly as
impressed by fingers as I am by tone. I have three CDs of the infamous
K622, and my favorite by far is the Shifrin, simply because his tone is so
deep and focused, and it is consistent from his lowest C to the altissmo
G. Never once does it get bright or squealy. Sure, Meyer moves her
fingers a little faster, but her sound gets a little thin above high b.
Same goes for Niedich (although - Neidich DOES improvise, which is really
cool, and is the proper thing to do).

Marcellus...well...that recording is like, canon or something. I dunno.

But my point is, I'm MUCH more impressed by a player who can consistently
play with a good, focused sound in all registers, with excellent
musicality and phrasing, then I am by someone who can burn through the
Rossini and sound shrill, or wail through the Gershwin gliss but sound
dry and reedy when playing the rest of lick.
