This is kind of a nasty answer. I started playing sax in a band several
months ago, and people would do things during warm up - playing certain
tunes and riffs and stuff just to show off. I wanted to do that too. I
asked my teacher and he taught me some runs and got me to memorize the blues
scales and improvise riffs around that. It made me sound more competent
when warming off - which was showing off in a sense, but it was also a
chance to learn some things to improve my playing.

Everyone likes to be noticed a bit and nothing is wrong with wanting to
learn a clever riff or trick. I practice and work very hard on my
instrument, but I still wanted to learn a few "tricks".
