Two comments -

1. As to "religion was paying the bills", it was most likely with money
extracted from folks who could ill afford to part with it. The problem of
how to (or who should) fund the arts continues!

2. As to whether Cellini, "anchored one end of the bell curve", I would
guess that Mark is making the same point I have with the statement that
creative people are, by definition, not average.
