I have used Gortex pads in my clarinet and repadded another with them. First
of all, realize that they are just like the traditional skin pads except for
the covering: they have a cardboard backing, felt center, then the Gortex
outer covering rather than the usual fish skin. The covering does not have
wrinkles in it, therefore the surface is smoother, reflects the air better
and does not buzz. Because there is still a felt center, I don't understand
the claim that they don't swell, the felt center being still affected by
humidity. While I feel they are excellent pads, there does seem to be an
awful lot of "hype" from Buffet about them and I'm not sure they are the
final word in pad construction. My own opinion, of course, but I think the
Valentino pads are superior. Oh, and yes, you do heat the pad cup when
installing the pads in the the usual way. Doug P.
