The NY Times reports that Brad White, a former Green Beret and ski
instructor, teaches US musicians to overcome their performance anxiety.
He instructs the musicians in a "centering technique" and subjects them
to adversity training, everything from dropping things loudly behind
them to plunging them into total darkness.
He also encourages them to give a name to their fears and to say
silently, for example "Go away, Pete."

Subject: [donax-m] TSO contracts
With the recent posting on Phila. orchestra contract, this seened
appropriate. This is from last Friday's CBC on line news service.
Toronto Symphony Orchestra musicians
consider mandate to strike
Meanwhile, Edmonton's Symphony Society and musicians
try to reach a
deal
CBC RADIO ARTS
TORONTO - The musicians of the Toronto Symphony
Orchestra may be
on strike before the end of this month. The
musicians are expected to vote
on strike action today, after attempts to mediate
the dispute between
management and musicians broke down.
The main issue is money. In 1992 the musicians took
a 16 per cent pay cut
to help the TSO stave off bankruptcy. A management
spokesperson says
the TSO is in a financially delicate position.
At the end of 1998, the orchestra had a deficit of
nearly $600,000. That
figure is expected to grow considerably when the
orchestra announces its
financial results for fiscal 98/99.
If the two sides don't reach a deal, the TSO's
season opener could be in
jeopardy.
There's also trouble brewing for Edmonton Symphony
Orchestra. The
Edmonton Musicians' Asociation and the Edmonton
Symphony Society are
negotiating a new contract. Both groups have agreed
not to discuss the
negotiations in public.
However, on Wednesday morning, the symphony
musicians failed to show
up to rehearse for this weekend's season opening.
The ESO says the time
was used to address some of the negotiation issues.
An afternoon rehearsal went ahead as planned, and
both the ESO and
Edmonton Musicians' Association say the weekend
concert will go ahead.
