Abe Galper quoted the following from a newspaper article:

I wasn't familiar with this Cincinnati incident, but something similar
happened in Boston. German-born Karl Muck was the director of the Boston
Symphony Orchestra when the US entered W.W.I, and a brilliant conductor he
was, too! He was also a very forward-thinking musician -- for example, he
and the Boston Symphony made the first orchestral recordings in the US for
Victor, in 1917. I have some of those old 78's, and although the
acoustically recorded sound is sorely lacking in fidelity, the playing and
interpretation are wonderful!

Muck didn't believe that "patriotic airs" belonged on symphony programs and
he similarly refused to begin concerts with "The Star-Spangled Banner."
The was arrested (for treason or some equally ridiculous charge), spent
more than a year in jail, and was then deported.

What would be the advantage for the players in having a shorter deal?
