Subj: [kl] Low E-flat--Brahms 4

I noticed something strange yesterday morning while in a rehearsal for
Brahms 4th symphony. As many of you know, the third movement is written for
C clarinet. Unfortunately our principal doesn't have a C so I have to play
it on B-flat (I play second). Turns out to be just as well because there is
a low e-flat written in the part.

Does anybody know why this is there. Was there a low e-flat C clarinet back
then that Brahms wrote for? or was it originally supposed to be transposed
to B-flat and it never made it into the parts?

Any ideas? This is the only time I have seen that note in the music of
Brahms. (I could be wrong, but it is also the only C clarinet part I've
ever played in a piece by Brahms)
