Wish your schedule included the Washington, D.C. area. Along with Jennifer
Jones and Bruce Keplinger, I would like to buy a tape or transcript of your
lecture. (Ulterior motive: I hope to finish the final draft of _Passacaglia
and Fugue_ within a few months and am on the prowl for background for a
sequel.)

But today hasn't been much of a writing day, because I had to do some minor
yard cleanup after the western edge of Hurricane Floyd sideswiped us
yesterday. Also ran the shop vac over the northwest edge of the basement
(w)rec(k) room utility carpet again. Hope it doesn't grow mushrooms. My
husband and Shadow and I live in Northern Virginia, just outside Washington,
D. C.. We took no significant damage and wouldn't have had even this small
nuisance with the basement except that the floating sensor on our sump pump
chose yesterday to conk out. Preparing for the much worse weather we
expected, we'd rolled up and stashed the rugs that normally cover the utility
carpet (thin stuff that's meant to get wet and dry out quickly), so there's
no harm done. I came home and discovered the malfunctioning sump before
serious flooding got underway. No clarinets floating down the street or
anything like that! Hope the rest of you got off so lightly.
