Martin wrote that the viola and cello parts were "at the same pitch".
Actually, they are an octave apart, thereby creating quite a different foil
for the clarinet...octaves where there had been unisons, etc. I personally
think the pieces work very well with cello. Like so many pieces of the
Romantic era, publishers made alternate performance possiblities to try to
ensure sales of the publications. It is not at all clear that these
alternate instrumentations are the wishes of the composer, and could well be
only publishers' demands.
