Re playing Bruch pieces with cl vc pno:

The Simrock (=8 pieces individually, expensive) lists
instrumentation as vl va pno *or* vn vc pno. Separate vn and vc
parts are provided; unfortunately, vc is attached to the cl part and
vn to va, so one has to do some cutting. The vc and va parts are
at the same pitch, with a few minor differences.

Don't know about the cheaper Masters' edition.

I've played through but not performed (by happenstance, not
deliberate choice) some of the pieces with vc instead of va and it
worked fine. I think the variation in sonority due to different
personalities and approaches of the va/vc player is roughly of the
same magnitude as that caused by using vc instead of va. Hey, some
people I play these pieces with often even use fl va pno for #6 as a
gigging piece when I'm not around...and sometimes even when I am!

However, I do feel that there is sufficiently more cl vc pno than cl
va pno rep that I think it a shame to not do some of that if you
have time in your program for all of the Bruch 8! They're a bit
monotonous all together, I find --- but that's purely personal
prejudice.
