I think Tony Pay's eloquent explanation of tongueing vanquishes the eggspurts
who believe people come in either verbal or musician/artist models, so that
in theory, the writers can't play while the musicians can't write. It's
heartening to see a proven, top-level clarinetist write about tongueing so
clearly and in such useful detail. Evidently you haven't "overthought" to
the point of blocking your ability to play: an object lesson in itself.
Thank you very much for going to the trouble to write and post this
thought-provoking commentary. Please do write the book!

Tony wrote,
>Children beginning to talk learn to perform incredibly subtle movements of
the tongue, though they have no sense of directing their own physical
actions. They can even talk and eat at the same time.>

So true. In fact, toddlers can even talk and spit up at the same time.
Perhaps a well-funded government laboratory in an undisclosed location busily
investigates whether children with unusual aptitude for blowing chunks while
screaming show more promise as future clarinetists or future trombonists. No
doubt many parents willingly donate their children for this research.

Thanks again--

Lelia

Subject: [donax-m] Basset clarinet

There was a recent note on Klarinet about a concert that includes the
Mozart Clarinet Quintet K 581- version for basset clarinet. I have not
heard this version, and would like to know if there is a published
score, and / or recording.

TIA

Janet
