My personal experience mirrors Daniel's statements. Over the
years, list members have described some of their ingenious
home-made bass clarinet stand contraptions, but I've not seen
many -- if any -- testamentaries to the existence of commercial
bass clarinet stands cheaper and sturdier than the Koenig & Meyer
folding stand for $89. It really is an excellent piece of hard-
ware -- thick metal construction, wonderfully collapsible, and
fairly indestructible. My main complaint is that the upper neck
of the stand, which you extend from the main body, does not have
some sort of protrusion to keep you from pulling the neck com-
pletely out of the body. Thus, if you pull too far and too fast,
you have to waste time re-inserting it into the square hole of the
main body before tightening the screw that keeps it at the desired
height. Another small drawback is that, if you're not observant,
over time one of the three black rubber feet might loosen itself
off of a leg, and then you're left with a slightly slanted stand,
although this doesn't necessarily impact the utility of the stand
itself. But if all three feet disappear, then the stand will slide
around on a smooth surface, which is potentially disastrous. The
solution, of course, is to super-glue the rubber feet onto each
of the legs, thereby preemptively ensuring that they never fall
off. For the $89, the K&M stand seems like the best thing around
for the money.

Pardon me for changing the subject. First posting from a lurker...Today=
I
purchased a used bass clarinet (a Selmer, in decent shape, as far as I =
can
tell) and am really excited to be playing it after 34 years! I play in =
a
community band (have been playing the Bb for a few years) and will be t=
he
only bass clarinetist, so I intend to practice hard to demonstrate the =

beauty
of the instrument (well, maybe that won't be for awhile yet *chuckle*).=

Anyway, I tried to get a stand for the bass and the Sam Ash store I wen=
t to
did not have one. I called Woodwind and Brasswind and the only 2 they h=
ad
for
the bass were $70 and $89. Having spent most of my extra money on the
instrument itself, I cannot afford those prices right now. Does anyone =
know
where I might start looking for a more reasonably priced stand, or do I=
have
any choice in the matter? Thanks for your attention. Back to lurking...=
